I’ve always wanted to do some shots like this, but just never got around to it before. Most of us have experienced the misfortune of trying to take low light exposures with long exposure times and they came out blurred because we could only hand hold the camera. Well, after surfing around flickr.com recently I decided to see what all the fuss was about and make my own light paintings.
My buddy was the driver and I spent my time trying to play with the camera settings to see how I could manipulate the results. Sometimes I would hand hold the camera, and other times I would place the camera on the dashboard to steady the exposure. Many of shots looked the same and didn’t excite me all that much, but a handful really stood out. I plan on going out again for another experimental adventure to to hone my skills with this technique. I’ll probably the reverse idea by setting up my camera on a tripod from a bridge somewhere and catch the light trails left by the traffic rushing by on bridges and overpasses. I’ll blog about my results soon.
